About Our Fund Shortlist

We’ve introduced the Torquil Clark Fund Shortlist to replace our ISA Cream List. We’ve increased the number of funds covered to over 40, covering a whole range of sectors.
Of course, none of the funds on the list constitute a recommendation and won’t be suitable for everyone. Suitability will depend on your own circumstances, objectives and attitude to risk. What the list does for you is narrow the field down considerably from over 2,000 investment funds available on the market to a shortlist of funds you might want to consider if you are about to make a new investment. The risk involved with each fund varies, for example those invested overseas, in smaller companies, or which produce a higher yield, will carry a greater degree of risk.
How do funds make it onto the Shortlist?
- The normal philosophy behind the choice of a Unit Trust is to select a Fund with a consistent past performance record within a top-performing Unit Trust group and with a manager who has a proven track record. Preference is usually given to a Unit Trust which is likely to provide the Manager with wide investment scope, so funds investing in very narrow areas are not normally selected.
- The aim is for the Fund to have a consistent above average performance in the medium to long term rather than necessarily being the top-performer in the very short term.
- The potential risk as well as the potential reward is taken into account.
- In order to achieve a spread of management and reduce any adverse effect of a change in Fund Manager, there will be a maximum of three Trusts under the management of any one person on the list.
- A Trust will not appear on the list until we have, as far as possible, been satisfied that a good performance is likely from the Trust relative to its sector. Therefore, in normal circumstances, new Unit Trusts will not appear immediately on the shortlist. It is generally considered preferable to choose a Trust which has been properly investigated rather than select one which has no track record with the consequent greater risks involved.
Most of the funds we’ve highlighted are available through the Fund Supermarket so you can invest in a number of them all from the same tax year’s ISA allowance if you want to. Of course, you can invest in any of these funds outside an ISA as well.
Don’t forget that we waive our usual £25 administration fee for ISA applications made through the Fund Supermarket either online or by post.
